Nyungwe Forest National park

Nyungwe Forest National Park is a tropical forest with a high canopy which is located south of Lake Kivu on the border of Rwanda with Burundi. The Park was established in 2004 and covers an area of approximately 970 km² of rain forest, grassland, swamps, bamboo, rainforests and bogs. Nyungwe is the largest swathe of Montane Forest left in both Central and East Africa.  The forest is also a habitat to almost 275 species of birds and almost 75 species of mammals including 13 primate species.

The nearest town to Nyungwe Forest National Park is Cyangugu which is 54 km to the west and Mount Bigugu which is also located within the Park boarders.

Attraction in the Park:

Nyungwe is enriched with a lot of attractions and these include:

  • 13 primate species
  • 275 bird species
  • It being the largest Montane Forest remaining in Africa
  • Mt. Bigugu which is 2925m
  • 260 species of trees and shrubs
  • Orchids and giant lobelias (over 140 species)
  • Butterflies of over 120 species
  • Reptiles of 3 different species and so on

Accessibility


The nearest town to Nyungwe Forest National Park is Cyangugu. You can never walk individually while in the Park and so you can only move when you are with the ranger guide

Activities at Nyungwe Forest National Park

There are so many activities in the forest, you can either track chimpanzees or search for Ruwenzori colobus monkeys which are countless here. Some of the primates you can find here are; The common chimpanzees, Adolf Friedrich’s Angola Colobus, L’hoest Monkey, the Silver Monkey, Golden Monkey, Hamlyn’s Monkey, Red-tailed Monkey, Dents Mona Monkey, Vervet Monkey, Olive Baboon and Grey-cheeked Mangabey and others. Accommodation facilities in the Park

There are basically 2 accommodation facilities in the Park. There is Gisakura guest house (ORTPN) for budget travelers and Nyungwe Forest Lodge for luxury travelers
