Volcanoes National Park

Volcanoes National Park in English/Parc National des Volcans in French was the first National Park to be created in Africa and Rwanda. The Park is lies in the north western part of Rwanda and borders the Virunga National Park in Democratic republic of Congo and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in Uganda. This Park is located in Ruhengeri which is almost 2 hours drive from Kigali the country’s capital

The Park was gazzetted in 1925 because it was so small yet it consisted of the rare species of primates which are Mountain Gorillas. This Park is well known for its variety of Mountain gorillas and also surrounded by the 5 Virunga Volcanoes such as Karisimbi, Bisoke, Muhabura, Sabinyo and Mgahinga.

Attractions in the Park

Several attractions found in the Park include:

  • The Mountain Gorillas with Suza family as the largest, other Gorilla groups include: Amahoro, Sabinyo, Umubano and so many others.
  • Other attractions in the Park include: Animal species like the black fronted duiker, the golden monkeys, buffaloes, some bird species like; beautiful francolins, Rwenzori Turacco and others.
  • The twin lakes of Ruhondo and Burera in the vicinity are very good components of attractions.
  • The five peaks of the Virunga Volcano which are: Karisimbi (4507m), Sabinyo (3634m), Mgahinga (3474m), Muhabura (4127m) and Bisoke (3711m).
  • Crater Lake on top of Bisoke


Accessibility to the park

The easiest way to reach Volcanoes National Park is to use Musanze road which was called Ruhengeri and this can be basically reached by using a public transport from Gisenyi, and Kigali. However, there’s no public transport available between Musanze and the park headquarters at Kinigi.

Activities at Volcanoes National Park

There are several activities done at the Park. These include:

  • Mountain Gorilla tracking
  • Visiting Dian Fosse’s grave
  • Birding
  • Golden monkey tracking
  • Hiking on Mt. Karisimbi, Muhabura, Sabinyo, Bisoke and Mgahinga
  • Visiting the twin lakes of Burera and Ruhondo
