12 Days Uganda and Rwanda Primates Safari

Day 1, Ngamba Island Visit
Our Safari guide will pick you up from your Hotel in Kampala or Entebbe and transfer you to the Pier for a briefing and board your boat to Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary. You can either take a speed boat which takes only 45 minutes or a traditional boat which takes 90 minutes. En route you will cross the Equator. Upon arrival, you will be briefed about the Chimpanzees on the sanctuary and after this you will be escorted by the care takers of the place to the visitors viewing platform to see the feeding of these Chimps which are man’s closet friends and cousins. It is amazing to see that they behave just like man. After the feeding you will go for refreshments, dinner and overnight stay at G&C Luxury Tented Camps

Day 2, Forest walk (This is subject to acknowledgment of Immunization Inoculations as a prerequisite)
After breakfast, you will participate in the forest walk. You will be joined with other people and hence become part of the team which goes out that day in the field to meet the young or infant Chimps. This experience will also be hardly forgotten since you can get a chance to hold them, play with them as they enjoy their day today life. The infant chimpanzees are aged between 5 – 9 years and will have direct contact as you orient them to a new life in the forest. Return back to the pier in the afternoon and get a boat to Entebbe Pier.  Upon reaching the Entebbe Pier, your guide will already be waiting for you to transfer you to the Uganda Wildlife Education center for a short tour and wildlife viewing as they are in cages. Transfer back to Kampala for dinner and overnight stay at Kampala Serena Hotel for Luxury/Ministers Village Hotel or Hotel Rutch for budget/Imperial Royale or Cassia Lodge for mid range.

Day 3, Transfer to Lake Mburo National Park
Early in the morning you will take breakfast and will be picked up from your Hotel in Kampala to transfer you South Westwards to Lake Mburo National Park. En route you will have a stopover at Kayabwe for the Equator experiments and also get a chance to see the line that separates the Northern Hemisphere from the Southern Hemisphere. Proceed and reach Lake Mburo in time for lunch. Have lunch and in the afternoon, go for a boat ride on Lake Mburo. This will give you a chance to experience Uganda’s beauty and wildlife such as Hippos, Crocodiles and the bird species such as the rare shoe bill stork. Dinner and overnight stay at Mihingo Lodge or Mantana Luxury tented camp for Luxury/ Arcadia Cottages for Mid range/ Rwonyo Campsite.

Day 4, Game drive and transfer to Kibale National Park
After breakfast, you will indulge in the morning game drive where you will be able to see animals such as Zebras, Lions, Elephants, Kobs, Antelopes and Warthogs. Later return back to your lodge for refreshments and transfer to Kibale Forest National Park. This Park is a home to over 13species of primates which include the Colobus monkeys, Chimpanzees, the blue mangabeys, red tailed monkeys, baboons and so on.   Dinner and overnight stay at Chimp Nest or Kibale Forest camp for mid range/Chimpanzee guest house for budget/ Ndali Safari Lodge or Primates Lodge for Luxury.

Day 5, Chimp Trek and transfer to Queen Elizabeth National Park
After breakfast, you will prepare for your morning chimp trek with in the forest. The briefing and the trek starts from Kanyachu the Park headquarters at 7:30am. While in the forest expect to encounter different primate species besides the chimps since the forest has 13 primate species. Expect to see the grey-cheeked mangabey and red-tailed monkey. Besides primates, there are also a lot of bird species in the forest. Once you come across the chimps, you will enjoy the company of these man’s closest friends. Return back to your lodge for lunch and in the afternoon, transfer to Queen Elizabeth National Park. The journey en route will offer you with views of the great Mountains of the Moon and a game drive en route. This will expose you to different wildlife and bird species. Among the wildlife, look out for Lions, Elephants, buffaloes, leopards, antelopes, Warthogs, and a lot of Kobs. Day 6, Game drive and launch cruise
After breakfast, you will go for the morning game drive in the park (Kasenyi area) and search for different wildlife such as Lions, Elephants, buffaloes, leopards, antelopes, Warthogs, and a lot of Kobs. Return to the lodge for lunch and in the afternoon, you will go for the launch cruise along the Kazinga channel. The channel attracts a lot of wildlife and a lot of bird species. After the cruise, return back to your lodge for dinner and overnight stay at Simba Safari Camp for Budget/ Queen Elizabeth Bush Lodge for Mid range / Mweya Safari Lodge for Luxury

Day 7, Chimpanzee tracking and Transfer to Bwindi
After breakfast, you will transfer to Kyambura gorge for Chimpanzee tracking. You will first go for the briefing at 7:45 am. Chimpanzees are one of the closest Man’s friends and seeing them is amazing. Your ranger will provide you with detailed information about the flora and fauna that you will encounter as well as primate on your way to the Gorge. Return back to the lodge for refreshments and later transfer to Bwindi National Park via Ishasha sector which is commonly known for its rare tree climbing lions. Later transfer to Bwindi where you will have dinner and overnight stay at Buhoma Community Bandas or Wagtail Eco Safari Camp for Budget/ Nkuringo Gorilla Camp or Buhoma Lodge for Mid range / Mahogany Springs or Gorilla Resort or Gorilla Forest Camp for Luxury

Day 8, Bwindi Gorilla Trek
You will wake up very early in the morning for breakfast and transfer to your starting point for the Gorilla trek briefing which is made by the Uganda Wildlife Authority wardens. You are advised to travel with your lunch boxes and bottled water.  Your ranger guide will lead you to the forest and will guide you along the way about the flora and fauna existing in the forest until when you reach the Gorilla family allocated to you. The Mountain Gorillas are so extra ordinary and they are one of the most elating primate encounter in the world. There are currently only almost 700 still existing in the world and almost half of these Gorillas are found in Bwindi in Uganda. Depending on where the Gorillas were last night, the trek takes between 2 to 8 hours. However an encounter with these friendly primates will be so exciting and wonderful (Once a life time encounter and experience which is hard to forget). Their encounter will enable you to forget all the steep slopes and valleys you have gone through. After meeting them, you will return back to your lodge for relaxation, refreshments, dinner and overnight stay at Buhoma Community Bandas or Wagtail Eco Safari Camp for Budget/ Nkuringo Gorilla Camp or Buhoma Lodge for Mid range / Mahogany Springs or Gorilla Resort or Gorilla Forest Camp for Luxury

Day 9, Transfer to Rwanda
After breakfast, you will be transferred to Rwanda. Upon arrival at the border, you will clear with the immigration and later enter Rwanda.  (Note:  you need a confirmation letter to get a Rwanda visa and therefore you are advised to contact the Rwanda consulate in your country.  Alternatively, you can check for procedures of how to apply for Rwanda visas). On arrival, you will transfer to Ruhengeri for dinner and overnight stay at Kinigi Guest House for Budget or Le Bambou Gorilla Lodge for Mid range or Mountain Gorilla view lodge or Virunga Lodge for Luxury.

Day 10, Rwanda Gorilla trek
You will take breakfast early morning before you report to Parc National Des Volcans head quarters in Kinigi for a gorilla trek registration and briefing. After this, you will set off and enter the Virunga forest for the gorilla trek search. The time taken to search for these rare Mountain Gorillas varies with how close they are and some times, its unpredictable of their natural habitat. You will pass through steep slopes and valleys and once you reach your allocated Gorilla group, you will only be allowed to spend with them one hour and later you will return back. However, the one hour you will spend with them, will be very interesting, take photographs and the experience you will get, will be so interesting and this will make the highlight of your Rwanda Safari. Return to your lodge for lunch and in the afternoon, you will transfer to Gisenyi town on the shores of Lake Kivu. Lake Kivu is located on the borders of DRC and Rwanda and it drains its waters in River Ruzizi which also pours in Lake Tanganyika in Tanzania. Lake Kivu is the largest water body in Rwanda and also offers beautiful views of the still active Volcano in East Africa which is Nyiragongo. Day 11, boat ride and transfer to Kibuye
After breakfast, you will take a boat ride along Lake Kivu to Kibuye. En route, you will visit the Napoleon Island, Amahoro and Nkombo Island for cultural adventures and birding activities. This boat ride will also give you a clear view of the Nyiragongo Volcano in DRC. You will also visit the different fishing villages and get to know more about the fishing methods and tools used on the lake and Africa at Large. Day 12, Transfer back to Kigali and Fly out
After breakfast, you will transfer back to Kigali City for your final shopping. Later depending on your flight, you will transfer to the Airport for the flight and fly out.
